London Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
London Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and transport activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all services, including residential and commercial removals, packing, loading, transportation and unloading.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent injury and ill health, protect property and reduce risks arising from our operations. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that our work is carried out safely and with minimal risk to people, vehicles, buildings and goods. Health and safety is an integral part of our business planning, decision-making and daily operations.
Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance and will provide appropriate resources, training and supervision to implement this policy effectively. All employees and contractors are required to co-operate with this policy and to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others.
Legal Compliance and Continuous Improvement
London Man and Van will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice. We monitor changes in regulations and guidance to ensure our procedures remain up to date. We are committed to continuously improving our health and safety standards through regular review, consultation, training and performance monitoring.
This policy is reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for establishing, implementing and reviewing this policy, setting clear health and safety objectives and ensuring adequate resources are available.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation, including briefings, monitoring safe working practices, reporting hazards and ensuring that equipment and vehicles are used correctly.
All employees and contractors must follow safety procedures, use equipment properly, wear any required personal protective equipment, report incidents and near misses, and raise health and safety concerns without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before any removal or transport task is undertaken, potential hazards are assessed and appropriate control measures are identified. Typical risks include manual handling, moving heavy or awkward items, use of vehicles, slips and trips, work on stairs, and working in confined or cluttered spaces.
For each job we consider access routes, parking and loading restrictions, stairways, lifts, floor conditions, weather, and any special requirements for fragile, bulky or high-value items. Where risks cannot be eliminated, we reduce them as far as reasonably practicable through planning, equipment, team size and safe work methods.
Safe systems of work are established for lifting and carrying, loading and unloading, working in shared spaces, and managing interaction with customers and the public.
Manual Handling and Lifting Safety
Manual handling is a core part of removals work and is managed carefully to prevent injury. Our teams are trained in safe lifting techniques, including assessing load weight and shape, planning the route, using correct posture and working in pairs or teams when required.
We use handling aids such as trolleys, dollies, straps and ramps where appropriate to reduce strain and improve control. Loads are broken down into manageable units whenever possible, and items that are too heavy or unsafe to lift manually are handled with special equipment or additional staff.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
We operate our vehicles in a safe and responsible manner, recognising that our vans frequently work in busy streets and residential areas. Vehicles are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are roadworthy and suitable for their intended use.
Drivers are required to hold appropriate licences, follow road traffic laws and drive defensively, taking account of road conditions, weather and congestion. Loads are secured properly to prevent movement during transit, protecting both the driver and the goods being transported.
Where parking or access is restricted, we plan routes and unloading points in advance to minimise risks to staff, customers and the public.
Customer, Property and Public Protection
We take steps to protect customers, their property and members of the public from hazards arising from our work. This includes careful planning of loading and unloading areas, use of warning where appropriate, and maintaining clear walkways to prevent trips and collisions.
Protective materials such as covers, blankets and floor protection may be used to reduce the risk of damage to property and to prevent slipping hazards. Our teams are trained to work considerately in occupied premises and shared spaces, keeping tools and equipment tidy and under control.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
All equipment and tools used in our operations are selected to be safe and suitable for the job. They are inspected regularly and taken out of service if any defects are identified. Employees are instructed in correct use, storage and maintenance.
Where necessary, personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear or high-visibility clothing is provided and must be worn in accordance with company procedures and risk assessments.
Training, Information and Supervision
London Man and Van provides training and information to ensure that all staff understand the hazards associated with removals work and know how to manage them safely. This includes initial induction, role-specific instruction, and refresher training where required.
Supervision is provided proportionate to the level of experience and complexity of the task. New staff are supported by experienced colleagues until they are competent to work independently.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported as soon as possible so that they can be investigated and corrective actions taken. We analyse incident information to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Emergency procedures are in place for dealing with injuries, vehicle incidents, fire, property damage and other unexpected events. Staff are briefed on how to respond, including how to make the area safe and when to contact emergency services or building representatives.
Consultation and Communication
We encourage open communication about health and safety. Employees are invited to share suggestions, raise concerns and participate in discussions about improving safety in our operations.
Information about risks, controls and any changes to procedures is communicated clearly to staff, and we ensure customers receive relevant safety information relating to their move where appropriate.
Commitment to Review
London Man and Van is committed to keeping this Health and Safety Policy effective and relevant to our removals and transport activities. We review the policy regularly, update procedures when necessary and remain focused on protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
